Artists/Designer/Architect/Photographer: Anish Kapoor

Why have you chosen this
artist as your inspiration? |
|
Anish Kapoor is a multicultural artist who made many stunning
public sculptures. His work in 3D is particularly interesting to me and I
hope to learn more about his techniques for making modern sculptures. Also, Kapoor
have several sculptures that were made from resin, which is something I am learning
to work with for my 3D project. |

Resin, Air, Space II by Anish Kapoor 1998
This piece is very fascinating to me and inspired
me to look for alternative mediums and different colors that can be a good addition
or development to my project ideas. It has a modern look and it gives the impression
of space or spaceship. Also, it indicates a high level of craftsmanship. I
have looked at Kapoor’s other 3D sculpture as well, but this one was a
novelty. It is larger than the usual resin work I saw on YouTube, with
dimensions 69 x 152.5 x 68.3 centimeters. This work shows me what is possible
to create from resin and due to its size, it gives me a lot to wonder about.
Like how it was made, what materials could have been used to elevate it and
what kind of container Kapoor used to pour the resin in. |
|
Thinking about the work
you have looked at what do you intend to make that is inspired by this
artist? |
|
I intend to make a sea sculpture from resin and plastic. Basically,
I will fill the aquarium with resin after I add blue color to it to resemble
the sea. I have been searching for how Anish Kapoor made Air Space II, but I
have yet to find any results. And for that reason and because I am making a
small sculpture, I will be happy with the ones I found on YouTube. |
|
What do you think will
be the challenges of making this piece? |
|
·
Time, I always find myself
needing more time to finish what I start, so I have giving myself two weeks to
prepare and finish the sculpture. ·
Obtaining materials,
particularly glass for aquarium. I have looked online for flat custom glass,
but it will be very costly. If I do not find anything affordable, I will use
a big cylindrical jar that I have prepared just in case. |

If you have any other
thoughts or notes that you would like to make reflecting on the artists’ work
please add these below. |
|
Anish Kapoor created many public sculptures, in art museums and
outdoors in public places. His 3d work is very interesting because he takes
simple ideas and present them in his own way. By looking at his 3D galleries,
I get the impression that he has worked with every material he could put his
hands on, metal, clay, resin, plastic, stone, wood and much more. |

In your discussion of the artwork here, try to critically analyse the work in more detail; what do you think about the juxtaposition (relationship) of the curved form encased within the hard lines of the cuboid? What about the use of colour and reflective properties? Have a look at what others have said about this piece of work (or others) and discuss their views as well as your own, this will give you more depth to the references used here and the discussion on the work. The rest of the form is good and shows context to your own work.
