Art Portfolio Two - Idea development

Today, I thought more about the sculpture and I have drawn some more sketches that have alternative suggestions to how to make the final piece. My developed idea so far is a sculpture of a trapped turtle in a plastic bottle floating in a glass aquarium. The idea behind it is to show sea life struggle with plastic pollution in public and therefore raise pollution consciousness both personally and politically. This sculpture will invite people to think more responsibly in regard to wasteful behaviour and think more about humanity's roll in the environment. Even if one person gets inspired by it, it is worth.
Size:
The model will be about 20 cm high and 25-30 cm long and wide.
The sculpture is 180 cm high and 200-230 cm long (larger sculptures have more impact and can be seen from far and by more people).
Location:
The sculpture will be placed in a public park with lots of lawn around (for example, Abbey Park in Leicester). I think green (the lawn) and light blue(sea water) fit together very well. Also it will be placed on the lawn near a walking path or preferably near a crossing of multiple walking paths because I want it easily found and I want it to be seen by anyone walking by.
Alternative ideas:
Instead of a turtle, I could sculpt a golden fish or a dolphin. And I could add sand to the bottom of the aquarium. Or even make the plastic bottle stand in the middle in still water or have it slightly tilted in a wavy water.

  1. In your development posts, talk about how you feel the sketches work as a good outcome for your concept, or if they don't work then what might you do to improve it (reflection is something to employ throughout your work). Think about the research you have done into other environmental artworks and consider the conceptual approach where the work is not as literal and therefore might inspire more discussion and exploration by your audience. Make people think about plastic waste and the impact - how can you get the message across?
